SPOKEN WORD: ADAPTATIONS

A "book-n-hand" reading of two new plays adapted from novels. “Murderess” a play by Wesley Brown inspired by the 1904 novel of the same name by Alexandros Papadiamantis. Directed by Sharon Wyrrick. The cast includes David Anderson,
Benedicta Bertrau, Pippa Raup-Kounovsky, Paul Murphy, Laurie Portocarrero, Fern Sloan, and Susan Willerman.
 “Strange Business” adapted from her book of the same title by Rilla Askew, performed by the author and Paul Austin.

Artists in residence at the Millay Colony for the Arts share their work with members of the community in a relaxed and informal setting. June artists include Eliza Newman-Saul, Charles Lume, Samita Sinha, Keith Ekiss, Jibade-Khalil Huffman, and Willett Thomas.

SHAPE- NOTE SING
7:00-9:30PM - Free
The first of new monthly community sings focused on the American tradition of shape-note singing, a joyful, spirited, and democratic singing tradition. There are no auditions or performances, just singing for the pure joy of it. Listeners, beginners, and people of all ages are welcome.

To kick off this new group there will be a singing school taught by Allison Schofield, a resident of Chatham who has taught and sung this music for almost ten years, everywhere from Old Sturbridge Village to the Academy Awards to rural Alabama. Read more about Shape-Note Singing

Friday, June 22
FAMILY DRUM CIRCLE
6:00PM - Free
The drop-in Drum Circle meets the forth Friday of each month and is free of charge. No experience necessary. Participants of all ages are encouraged to bring  percussion instruments, including hand drums, bells, shakers, and homemade instruments; some drums will be provided. Facilitated by Steve Collins.

FAMILY CONCERT: SHERI & LINCOLN MAYORGA
3:00pm - $10 adults/kids 12 and under free
"Down the Rabbit Hole and into the Wilds of American Music" a selection of American songs chosen especially for young audiences. Proceeds benefit free summer KidsArt programs.

CABARET IN THE COUNTRY: SHERI & LINCOLN MAYORGA
American Snapshots: 200 Years of American Song
6:00PM – Doors open 5:30PM - $25/$50 patrons
Sheri and Lincoln Mayorga wend their way from America's mountaintops, to the ballads and be-bop of the city, and into the storm of American politics.
Songs and piano solos delivered with heart and craft forge a musical American panorama with height, breadth, and depth. A special performance to support free KidsArt programs at the Academy. Read more.

TRADITIONAL MUSIC: BODEGA
7:30PM – $15/$12 members
Five young musicians from Scotland play traditional music with a fierce energy, imagination, and joie de vivre. Bodega is taking the Celtic music scene by storm. Gillian Chalmers, pipes and whistle; Ross Couper, fiddle; Tia Files, acoustic and bass guitar; Norrie MacIver accordion, guitar, djembe, vocals; and June Naylor clarsach and piano. WORKSHOP WITH BODEGA
10:00am-1:00pm - $20
The talented young musicians from Bodega will lead classes in traditional fiddle playing for students young people and adults at all levels, with offerings in guitar and piano band accompaniment. Based on interest, classes in Celtic harp, Scottish pipes/whistle, and accordion may also be offered. From 11:30-1:00 students and band members will play together with an emphasis on material covered in the class. Call 392-3693 for more details.

GALLERY: ARCADIA: FOUR ARTISTS RECONSIDER THE PASTORAL IDEAL

Opening Reception 4:00-6:00pm - Free

Opening reception with the artists of a group show featuring works that comment on the natural world today. Paintings by Ellen Lanyon and Irene Siegel. Sculpture by David Shaw and Marcella Anna Stasa. Gallery hours Thursday-Sunday 1-5pm. Exhibition continues through August.
