Since their invention, paper and ink have always gone very well together. Paper receives ink very well and throughout the history of printmaking, lithographs, etchings, woodcuts and screen prints were almost always printed on paper. Paper was unassuming, anonymous and not part of the art. The one exception that I know of is the fashion of nineteenth century American landscape etchers who frequently printed on silk.
However the graphic arts have always been an area for inventive experimentation, not only in technique, but as to what other surfaces can be printed on. In doing so, the support material which receives printing ink becomes integral to the image. When incorporated into clay or glass the print becomes part of a stand alone object. If it is printed on wood, metal, fabric or an encaustic panel, it can hang on a wall unadorned without a frame.
Through teaching and printing I frequently meet artists who have the notion that there are lots of rules governing printmaking as to what one can and cannot do. There are no rules. Not Printed on Paper, brings together the work of thirty artists who, as the announcement card for this exhibition suggests, have decided to throw away the paper.

Founded in 1995, the Center for Contemporary Printmaking was established to support and encourage serious emerging and professional artists in the creation of original prints and to educate the community to a better understanding and appreciation of prints and the process of printmaking. It offers both an historic and contemporary view of printmaking, encouraging traditional techniques as well as modern technologies.
