A view of the world where
nothing is as it seems.
At first glance Robin Tewes’ paintings appear to depict perfectly ordered, if
somewhat barren, domestic scenes; ordinary people in everyday situations. But, a
closer examination reveals that nothing is quite as it seems. Rooms are
occupied, but hauntingly empty; subtle patterns on the walls or floors are
actually scribbled, insistent and sometimes erotic messages; windows open onto
brick walls. The rigid domestic order is a carefully crafted stage set against
which a complex psychological narrative is revealed.

“The vacancy that surrounds the people and objects in the environment takes on
an aspect of the subconscious.” says Tewes. “The images and words etched into
the walls can be after thought projections of someone who was in or is about to
enter the room. They can have a contradictory quality to the environment, yet
are integrated into the space, as they are into human consciousness.”
Tewes demonstrates her complete command of realist painting in a series of
small, meticulously rendered interiors, creating images with an almost
photographic specificity that use subtle twists of perspective, space, light and
color to create a palpable sense of unease.
Artforum
praised Tewes for her “searingly direct presentation of information and its
strong emotional impact;” placing her among a small group of painters who
challenge viewers to see life as it is and not through the mitigating, cosmetic
lens of the media.
Guest curator John Weber, who exhibited Tewes’ work at the John Weber Gallery in
Soho during the 1990s, has assembled a carefully edited exhibition of oil
paintings and works on paper.
Robin Tewes has been the recipient of two New York Foundation for the Arts
